creationists believe the Genesis story of creation where the world was created in 7 days.
this is a quote from "Of Pandas and People," a book which teaches intelligent design...
"intelligent design means that various forms of life began abruptly through an intelligent agency, with their distinctive features already intact- fish with fins and scales, birds with feathers, beaks, and wings, etc. Some scientists have arrived at this view since fossil forms first appear in the rock record with their distinctive features intact, rather than gradually developing."
here is what i believe:
- darwin = genius. of course evolution exists and natural selection is a key component of that
- a higher being of some kind also exists
- despite the possibility of God, ONLY (and i can't stress that enough) evolution should be taught in schools
- this higher being most likely jumpstarted evolution/natural selection and created the first cells and sparked the Big Bang, etc etc. however after that this being took a backseat to nature.
- intelligent design and creationism should only be taught in religious classes. not as actual scientific theories as they cannot be proved or disproved with concrete evidence.
- by allowing "intelligent design" to be taught alongside evolution in classrooms cheapens real science.
in the TIME article it said that there were states that even today have no mention of evolution in their curriculum standards. and that Kansas is thinking about changing the actual defintion of science. does anyone else find this completely ridiculous and horrifying?
this idea of intelligent design is v. frustrating personally because it seems pointless to me to debate something that has been so well documented. if you get a chance read the article in TIME because it's extremely enlightening. it documents both sides v. well. here's a link to the story. and read the sidebar TIME forum, "Can You Believe in God and Evolution?" http://www.time.com/time/magazine/artic
ok that's my rant for the week.
